Alappuzha: Worried about spiraling crime, district police have decided to install CCTV cameras to cover every nook and cranny in the town. Surveillance cameras play a major role in detecting crime and keep a watch on suspicious activities.
CCTV camera monitoring will also help the police nab miscreants and traffic violators. The cameras will control crime activities and help maintain vigil over movements of strangers.
District police chief K M Tomy has directed all circle inspectors and sub-inspectors under Alappuzha sub division to take immediate steps for installing cameras with the help of residents’ associations and merchants in the town. The initiative will be launched within two months.
District police chief K M Tomy said that though there are many CCTV cameras in and around Alappuzha town they are low resolution cameras.
“Hence, we are unable to identify the culprits. This has forced us to take steps to install high resolution cameras in all most all the parts of the town, added the police chief.
At present, there are 37 CCTV cameras in Alappuzha town. However, some of them are not functional and all most all the cameras capture low-quality visuals. Currently, it is difficult for the police to get a breakthrough in cases.
A youth has vandalized over 25 vehicles in Alappuzha town on 7th February, 2019.
Even though the police retrieved the CCTV footage, the image of the accused and the vehicle he had used was not clear. This case prompted the police to install high resolution CCTV cameras as soon as possible.
Alappuzha DSP P V Baby said that they have started immediate steps for installing high resolution CCTV cameras in Alappuzha town.
“Discussions are on with merchants and residents’ associations for installing such cameras and we have received positive response from the people,” added the DSP.
He also said, “We will fix the cameras within a week. The cameras would take the load off the police machinery and help them maintain law and order, deal with crime, and regulate traffic. It will also ensure the safety and security of the people.”
According to Baby, Alappuzha sub division registered 850-900 criminal cases per month in 2018. Most of the cases were related to traffic violations.
“We have registered 389 cases last month for drunken driving. At least 75 cases were registered related to road accidents. Around 30 cases were registered related to cheating and clashes. As many as 150 cases were registered under Kerala Police Act in January,’’ Baby said.
